El Jardín Cantante es una instalación sonora comunitaria que ocurrirá en el estimado jardín comunitario RING el 23.º de octubre, 2022 (10AM-2PM). Concebido por Bent Duo, este proyecto participativo es una invitación para nuestros vecinos que vengan a activar el espacio del jardín con sonido, creando una armonía sonora que refleja nuestra diversa y vibrante comunidad. No se necesita experiencia musical y todo cualquiera puede participar por cualquier tiempo deseado. Habrá facilitadores bilingües (ING/ES) para asistir.
The Singing Garden
The Singing Garden is a community sound installation taking place at Inwood’s beloved RING community garden on October 23rd, 2022 (10AM-2PM). Conceived by Bent Duo, this participatory project invites our neighbors to activate the garden space with sound, creating a powerful sonic harmony that reflects our diverse and vibrant community. No musical training is required to participate and anyone is welcome to participate for as long or as short a time as they like. Bilingual (Eng/Esp) facilitators will be on hand to assist anyone who wants to take part.

How do I participate?
Anyone who shows up to the RING garden between 10AM-2PM is welcome to participate. Participation involves singing or humming on your own, as you spend time in the garden space. The combination of participants’ vocals as they move around and cross paths with each other in the garden will create a unique, collaborative, and constantly changing tapestry of sound.
¿Necesito ser músico o cantante profesional para participar?

Do I need to be a musician or singer to participate?
Absolutely not! Participating in the Singing Garden requires no musical background and facilitators will be on hand to help each person who wants to join in.

Where is the RING community garden?
RING (Riverside-Inwood Neighborhood Garden) is located at Lt. William Tighe Triangle, the green space between Riverside Drive, Seaman Avenue, and Dyckman Street near the intersection of Dyckman and Broadway in Inwood. The nearest public transportation is the A train at Dyckman Street, the Bx7 or M100 bus to Dyckman and Broadway, or the BxM1 express bus to Dyckman Street and Sherman Avenue. Nearest accessible subway stations: 1 train at Dyckman Street (downtown only), A train at 207 Street.
¿Puedo venir en grupo?

Can I come with a group?
Groups are welcome to participate, but each individual in the group will be asked to participate as an individual, singing or humming their own pitch and navigating the garden space on their own. The beauty of this sound installation is to create sonic harmony based on the random interactions we all have when crossing paths with other people in the neighborhood every day. We can collectively create this sonic structure if each of us participates equally and independently as individuals.

Are there any other rules or things I should know about participating?
The Singing Garden is a project based in sound. To facilitate everyone being able to hear the sonic tapestry that we are collectively creating, we ask participants to avoid making sounds or noises that would make it difficult for others to hear. While participants don’t have to hum or sing constantly while in the garden, we ask that if they take breaks from humming or singing in the space that they do so silently, so as not to disrupt others’ listening.

Los caminos peatonales en el jardín RING son de piedra creando superficies irregulares. Is the garden accessible?
The pedestrian paths in the RING garden are primarily made of cobblestones, creating generally uneven surfaces. There are multiple entrances through the iron fencing around the garden, all of which are wide; entrances on the west and north sides are level concrete (not cobblestone), although most paths are uneven surfaces once inside the garden. There are sidewalks and pedestrian benches surrounding the garden on all sides, and anyone wishing to avoid the cobblestone surfaces can listen to or participate in the sound installation from these positions, should they prefer.

What is the inspiration of this project?
The Singing Garden is inspired, in part, by the experimental tradition of artists such as Pauline Oliveros, who thought of creative music and sound not just in the context of performance but as a social and community practice. Inwood and the surrounding Uptown neighborhoods are vibrant communities filled with people from many different places and walks of life who collectively create the tapestry of identities and relationships that give the community its shape. The Singing Garden allows us to come together to reflect this community structure through sound. Each of us contributes our own voice and navigates our own path through the space of the garden and the duration of the installation, but the combination of all of those individual sounds and the relationships between them creates a beautiful and serendipitous whole, enriched by each of our individual contributions.

Who is Bent Duo?
Bent Duo is an Inwood-based collective that focuses on performing and creating experimental music and interdisciplinary projects. They are the creators of ‘The Singing Garden,’ which is supported by the Creative Engagements program of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and the Arts Engagement program of the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone.
